Visiting the world’s youngest volcano

Yesterday we went to visit the volcanic ruins of the San Juan Parangaricutiro church. On 20 Feb 1943 a new volcano (the world’s youngest), Parícutin, was born. It took a year for the lava to reach the church and the adjacent village (so even the slowest managed to escape unharmed), burying all but the church tower and altar. The Parícutin volcano continued to erupt for another eight years!
The road to and around the site is surrounded by a vast lava field. The last 14ish km in on both roads are dirt/gravel with occasional patches of sand.
Apparently this is a bustling tourist spot on the weekends, but we visited on a Wednesday and we were one of just a few visitors.
